Knee-type milling machines

Knee-type milling machines are most widely used milling machines among other types. This machines characterized by a movable worktable resting on a saddle which is supported by a knee that rides vertically on the column.

 

Knee-type milling machine types:

Vertical milling machines are characterized by a spindle located vertically, parallel to the column. Some machines are designed with swivel milling head to permit working on angular surfaces. This is a good choice for projects, mostly worked on a single side, such as sinking dies and working with metal plates.

Horizontal milling machines have fixed position horizontal milling spindle mounted on a level arbor over an X-Y table. Heavier parts and parts that need to be processed on multiple sides lend themselves better to horizontal milling machines.

Ram-type milling machine is characterized by a spindle attached to the ram. The cutter head can be swiveled from a vertical spindle position to a horizontal spindle position or can be fixed at any desired angular position between vertical and horizontal.

All this machines can also have a table swivel housing between the table and the saddle.  This permits the table to swing up to 45° in either direction for angular and helical milling operations. In this case this machines calls universal vertical milling machines or universal horizontal milling machines.
